Our Founder
Donna’s passion for accounting and business management took root early in her career. Prior to 1983, she honed her skills assisting a lawyer with their private practice’s accounting system and providing services for a Massachusetts Mutual Insurance general agent.
In 1983, Donna joined American City Business Journals Inc. (ACBJ), a privately-held publishing company based in Kansas City, Missouri. ACBJ aimed to launch weekly business journals as start-ups or acquire existing publications across the country. Donna was appointed to the start-up team as the business manager, responsible for setting up the administrative department, including accounting systems, human resources, payroll, office layout, and procurement of furniture and equipment. After a three-month period at each new location, Donna would hire and train a permanent business manager before the start-up team moved to the next city. She successfully executed this process for publication launches in Milwaukee, Portland, Sacramento, San Jose, Louisville, Columbus, and Kansas City. Donna also authored ACBJ’s accounting policy and procedure manual, which remained in use after her departure in 1989.
Stretching her entrepreneurial wings, Donna began offering accounting services as a sole proprietor in 1989. Her clients spanned diverse industries, including architecture, imaging, filmmaking, third-party fulfillment, and advertising. In 1996, Donna co-founded International Media Group Inc. (IMG) with three partners, acquiring the International Fiber Journal, a renowned technical trade publication for the man-made fiber industry. As CFO and operating officer, she masterfully handled IMG’s finances, human resources, and oversaw the training and management of the circulation department staff. The International Fiber Journal boasted a worldwide circulation and an international advertising representative network. After a decade of exceptional financial stewardship, IMG accepted a lucrative stock sale offer for the publication in 2006, with the buyer’s due diligence team praising Donna’s meticulous financial recordkeeping.
Following the sale of IMG, Donna continued providing financial and accounting consultancy as a sole proprietor to small and medium-sized businesses. In 2010, she established DSS Accounting, Inc. when she returned to the northwest suburbs of Illinois, building on her extensive experience to offer top-notch accounting services through her own firm.
